Minimally invasive implant technique without large surgical flaps
Bone preservation: preparing the site while trying to remove as little bone as possible
A Minimally invasive dental implant may require only a small site preparation and, in selected cases, be placed without large incisions with a possible reduction in pain and swelling , as shown in this historical case. The technique must, however, be chosen according to anatomy and safety, not merely to avoid incisions. Incisions and flaps may be necessary in some situations and are not inherently wrong; where a more conservative procedure is possible, tissue trauma may nevertheless be reduced. mimi-info.de. When and for whom are immediate implants suitable? In flapless surgery, the gum tissue is not raised as a large flap as in a conventional approach. Three-dimensional imaging, planning, clinical experience and, in some systems, guides or navigation can permit precise transgingival placement. The technique is not appropriate for every case and must maintain adequate safety margins from important anatomical structures.
In some systems the implant site can also be prepared using bone-condensation techniques.
Bone-condensation instruments aim to displace and compact some bone laterally instead of removing it all as drill shavings. The former practice used this technique in selected cases. In 2010 colleague Richard Forster also placed an implant in Dr Bernhard Junk himself; the implant remained functional for many years. This personal experience contributed to Dr Junk's interest in the approach. The large numbers and success percentages historically quoted on this page should not be interpreted as a guarantee for an individual patient. Implant success depends on many variables and should be discussed with the treating implant dentist. For further historical information see http://mundgesund.eu .

This archive was created to answer many questions about dentistry through multimedia material and clinical examples. During the active-practice years, the content was often used at the Munich practice to explain procedures. Patients could review the information at home and better understand decisions about their teeth. The images are deliberately realistic; anyone who does not want to see real photographs of the mouth should avoid the relevant galleries. A realistic image can explain more than many polished logos.
